Located east of Ashmont off Hwy. 28, Mallaig is a quaint little village known for its many events hosted by the Mallaig Agricultural Society, Mallaig Museum and the ever popular Haying in the 30’s – Cancer Support Society.
Haying in the 30’s is an annual event to be held on August 1, 2 & 3, 2009. This event relives the past using horse drawn equipment. This event was started in 1999 by Edgar Corbiere to help people in the local area who were stricken with cancer. Haying in the 30’s is growing every year and extends help to the northeast central area. This event is held on the August long weekend with the help of over 100 volunteers. Volunteers and sponsors in the region cover all of the expenses. There is no admission fee to attend this event as it relies soley on donations. One hundred percent of the money donated is given to cancer victims undergoing treatment to aid with expenses such as transportation, lodging and fuel costs. Entertainment at the event includes old time harvesting and demonstrations, wagon & pony rides, petting zoo, live music and more. Be sure to visit the Mallaig & District Museum – a recognized museum by the Alberta Museums Association. Open June 1 – Oct. 1 Mon. – Fri. 10 am – 4 pm. Indoor & outdoor exhibits depict life in early 1900’s encompassing 5 acres. The museum offers tailored tours for school groups. Open weekends for family reunions or special events by request. Special events include: Pie Social & Auction on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, Outdoor Pancake Breakfast on Grandparent’s Day in September. Free admission (donations appreciated).
